کوپلینگ ها به دو دسته کوپلینگ های منعطف و کوپلینگ های سخت تقسیم می شوند.

کوپلينگ انعطاف پذير علاوه بر انتقال گشتاور، وظيفه ساز گار کردن نا همراستايی محورها را به عهده دارند. نا همراستايی شافت ها به علت تغيير بار، تغيير دما، استارت ناگهانی يا توقف سريع به وجود می آيد.

طبقه بندی انواع کوپلینگ منعطف شامل کوپلينگ های انعطاف پذير مکانيکی و کوپلينگ انعطاف پذير متريالی می باشند. کوپلینگ های انعطاف پذیر مکانیکی خود شامل : کوپلینگ انعطاف پذیر دنده ای  (gear coupling)، کوپلینگ انعطاف پذیر فنری (grid coupling) و کوپلینگ زنجیری می باشد. کوپلينگ انعطاف پذير متريالی خود شامل: jaw coupling، rubber coupling و metallic dick coupling می باشد.
