قطعات تفلونی و PTFE درسال 1938 به طور تصادفی کشف شد. این ماده پلیمری (بسپاری) درسال 1944 بانام تجاری تفلون به ثبت رسید. تفلون PTFE پایین ترین ضریب سایش را دربین تمامی مواد دارد. تفلون PTFE یاهمان پلی تترا فلئور اتیلن از زنجیره ی اصلی کربن که به هر کربن ان دو اتم فلئور متصل شده است تشکیل می شود. درمدل سه بعدی پایین همین صفحه که توسط تفلون ایران ساخته شده است به وضوح می توانید ساختار مولکولی PTFE را مشاهده کنید. از ویژگی های دیگر تفلون PTFE می توان به مقاومت به حرارت از 280-400 درجه سانتی گراد مقاومت بسیارعالی در برابر اسیدها و بازهای قوی ضربه پذیری نسبتا بالا مقاومت کششی عالی و سطحی نچسب و غیر رسمی را نام برد.

تفلون PTFE در ساخت کلیه ی قطعات صنایع پتروشیمی که درتماس با اسیدها و بازهای قوی هستند کاربرد دارد. تفلون PTFE را می توان به عنوان آب بندها وگاز بندهای مختلف استفاده کرد، همچنین به دلیل مقاومت حرارتی بالا در فیلترها و سایر قطعاتی که نیاز به تحمل حرارتی بالا دارند استفاده می شود.
